The first IDEA Prize from XRB awared Teresa Gea for her research project entitled ‘Obtaining Enzymes with Innovative Catalytic Properties from Solid Organic Waste’.

The project “explores alterative ways to valuate solid organic waste, through application of biologic processes to obtain industrially or pharmaceutically relevant products with high added value”.

Jury president Jordi Garcia explained that Gea’s proposal was valued for being “different than the majority of projects that are typically submitted to these types of prizes, as it was unrelated to biomedicine or human health”, affirming that it “employs biotechnology for treating waste from a new perspective”. Garcia added that “the submitted proposals were generally of excellent quality”.
